Mr. Sweeney is the owner and sole shareholder of Wusinich & Sweeney, LLC. Mr. Sweeney continues the forty-year tradition of Wusinich & Brogan for serving clients in Chester County and beyond. Joseph F. Wusinich, III, serves as “Of Counsel” to the firm and consults on specific client matters and legal issues.
Mr. Sweeney’s practice focuses on employment law, workers’ compensation, personal injury, and disability/social security. Drawing on his experience as a graduate of a top five law school as well as his experience as an appellate clerk, he also takes civil cases that involve cutting-edge legal issues that are designed to move the law in a just and logical direction.
Born in Philadelphia, PA on November 3, 1964, Mr. Sweeney is a St. Joseph’s Prep graduate (1982) where he was a three-time all-Catholic runner in track and cross-country. In 1982, he received the Christian Brother’s Scholarship, a four-year full-tuition scholarship to La Salle University, which is awarded to select candidates with superior grades and SAT scores, as well as potential for extracurricular contribution to the La Salle community.
In 1986, Mr. Sweeney graduated maxima cum laude from La Salle University with a B.A. After working at Prudential drafting contracts and booklets for group health insurance plans, he went to law school at the University of Chicago Law School. In 1991, he received his J.D. from the University of Chicago. Also, in 1991, a law journal article he wrote while a law student received second prize in a national labor law competition sponsored by the University of California Boalt School of Law and was published in the Industrial Relations Law Journal.
From 1991 to 1993, Mr. Sweeney was an appellate law clerk to the Honorable James R. Cavanaugh of the Pennsylvania Superior Court. Since 1993, he has been a civil litigator. He first served as an Associate at Wusinich and Brogan until 2008 when he was named a partner. In 2019, he transitioned the firm to Wusinich & Sweeney, LLC.
Mr. Sweeney is not only a litigator, but has been a part-time Solicitor for various independent offices in Chester County, including the Office of the Prothonotary (1998-2005), the Office of the Recorder of Deeds (2000 to present), and the dual Offices of the Register of Wills and Orphans’ Court (2006 to 2011).
Mr. Sweeney is active in local public affairs and in his church. He currently serves as a Board Director for the Tredyffrin-Easttown School District and for the Chester County Intermediate Unit. He has served several terms on the Tredyffrin Planning Commission and on the Zoning Hearing Board. He was a three-term member of the St. Isaac Jogues Parish Council. He has been active in the Knights of Columbus, serving as Grand Knight of the St. Isaac Jogues Council. He is a leader in the Chester County Red Mass and was one of its original founders.
Mr. Sweeney has published scholarly articles on various legal topics and has lectured on them. Among them is a two-part comprehensive article in the Pennsylvania Bar Quarterly in 2005-2005 on practice issues that arise in Prothonotary Offices in Pennsylvania. In 2001, he also received the Larry Simonsmeier DuPont Legal Writing Award from American Society of Pharmacy Law for an article on punitive damages in the pharmacy law.
