Katie Holmes to Receive $400,000 a Year From Tom Cruise

Although Katie Holmes did not seek out to ruin Tom Cruise financially during their divorce, she got a hefty deal out of it anyway.

According to TMZ, the 33-year-old former “Dawson’s Creek” starlet will receive $400,000 annually, which averages out to about $33,333 a month. While that may seem like overkill, it’s just a fraction of the estimated $250 million Cruise is worth.

However, there’s always a catch. Since the couple had a prenuptial agreement in place, Katie isn’t entitled to that money. Instead, the $400,000 will be given as child support for Suri, the couple’s six-year-old daughter.  Suri will get this yearly allotment for the next 12 years until she turns 18.

Let’s not feel too bad for Katie. Even though she isn’t getting any spousal support, she has her own career which will bring her enough money regardless.

TomKat, as the ex-couple was known, ended their six-year marriage in what could be world record time. Holmes filed for divorce on June 28 and just five days later it was finalized.

How to Break the News of Divorce to Children

If you are thinking about getting a divorce, chances are you have thought the decision through and through and have already obtained a divorce lawyer. However, as hard as it may be to leave your spouse, the entire process can be even harder on your children.

Children can be seriously affected when their parents split up. Between new child custody arrangements and the sheer difference in their day-to-day lives, they can lash out in anger or even internalize their pain and believe they did something wrong to cause the divorce. Regardless of why you have decided to end your marriage, it is crucial to be gentle and straight forward when telling your kids so they are reassured that the divorce is not their fault.

The best thing to do is for both parents to tell their children together. It is going to be hard enough for the children to adjust to living apart, so working together and telling your children it was a mutual decision will help make the situation more comfortable. It may also be a good idea to talk to a family therapist about how best to approach the situation.

When you decide to tell the kids, make sure they don’t have anything important going on the next day. Finding out your parents are getting a divorce can affect performance in school, so avoid telling kids around important test dates. Also, reassure the child that the divorce was not their fault and try to keep things as similar to regular home life as possible. Tell the child that you will still spend a lot of time with them and that they can always come to you for anything.

While it is never easy for a child to deal with divorce, keeping their feelings in mind will always ensure that they do not feel left out or guilty.

Tom Cruise’s Post-Divorce Diet

Tom Cruise has always been in the limelight, but he has recently climbed his way to the top of the charts during and after his divorce from fellow thespian Katie Holmes.

The “Rock of Ages” star, who is now 50, does not look his age. And while many women reportedly join the “post-divorce weight loss club,” Cruise may be the first man to actually lose weight after a divorce as well.

Cruise reportedly lost 14 pounds from the stress of his divorce, which was finalized on Aug. 21. The actor, who was busy working on his next film when he received the call that he was being served with divorce papers, has allegedly not been eating very well.

“Tom is refusing to slow down and is trying to soldier on,” say sources close to Cruise. “He doesn’t seem to be himself. He hasn’t been working out like he normally does and doesn’t appear to be eating well at all. His clothes just hang off him. His way of dealing with this is to throw himself into his work, but as a result he’s not looking after himself.”

Cruise, who was supposedly shocked when he found out Katie filed for divorce after five years of marriage, had made headlines just a few months before after flaunting his six-pack abs on a photo spread in “W” magazine.

It’s fairly common to see divorced couples either lose or gain a lot of weight after enduring the stress of divorce proceedings. It is important to remain as healthy as possible throughout the case and to contact a divorce lawyer to ensure proceedings run as quickly and smoothly as possible.

Study Shows Men More Likely to Turn to Alcohol Post-Divorce

A new study shows that men are more likely to turn to drinking after a divorce than women.

While married, men as a whole do not drink as much as their bachelor counterparts, but the study revealed that an increasing number of men turn to alcohol in their time of need.

Conversely, married women drink more than their single friends and drink less post-divorce.

“Marriage and divorce have different consequences for men’s and women’s alcohol use,” said the study’s author Corinne Reczek to Health Day. “For men, it’s tempered by being married and exacerbated by being divorced.”

In a long-term study, Reczek, an assistant professor in sociology at the University of Cincinnati, and her team analyzed the behavior of 5,305 people in Wisconsin. The team then conducted in-depth interviews with 120 of the participants to determine why their drinking habits had changed.

This isn’t the first study to show a correlation between marital status and alcohol consumption. In 2004, a study conducted by Australian National University suggested that married couples generally drink less than singles. Last year, a study out of the Cardiff University suggested that couples who are happily married engage in healthier eating habits than single or unhappily married persons.

While some people can work on their marriage and surpass their issues, others cannot and so, turn to divorce. If you have considered divorce as an option, turn to a divorce attorney immediately to discuss your options and ensure your case runs smoothly and favorably.

Divorce lawyers help with child custody, alimony, post-nuptial agreements and many other matters. They will see to it your case ends quickly and fairly. Call to schedule a consultation with a divorce lawyer in your area today.

No End in Sight for Kim Kardashian’s Divorce Drama

Hollywood, CA- Kim Kardashian’s divorce is dragging on much longer that her brief 72-day marriage to Kris Humphries and after yesterday’s court appearance there seems to be no end in sight.

Humphries divorce team accused Kim’s attorney from holding up proceedings by delaying the discovery process. In court, Humphries team asked for detailed record about her reality show and depositions from Kim’s mother and current boyfriend, Kanye West in order to prove that his marriage was a fraud. If they can successfully prove fraud Humphries can be granted and annulment.

Marshall Waller, Humphries’ attorney told the judge, “I don’t want to use the word uncooperative, but they are not making the process easier.” Waller also told the judge he would need four more months to prepare for trial.

Kim’s divorce lawyer, Laura Wasser, accused Humphries of overreach and noted that the delayed proceedings have cost her client $250,000 in legal fees, which they plan to pass on to Humphries.

“To say I am frustrated is an understatement,” Wasser told the judge, “I’m at a loss to figure out what the hold-up is. They had a prenup and were married for 72 days. To what end does he want an annulment?”

Waller clarified their reasoning for seeking annulment stating he was trying to prove Kim “had no intention of proceeding with this marriage. That is was basically a contrivance for the benefit of her show and to make money.”

For Humphries, a Catholic, the divorce battle seems to be more about principle than money; he recently signed a contract with the Brooklyn Nets for $24 million.

Divorce Still Delayed for Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries

Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries are at it again. The NBA star has refused to set a trial date for the ex-couple’s long-awaited-for divorce until he can interview Kim’s mom, Kris Jenner, and her current boyfriend, Kanye West.

A divorce attorney for Humphries said it will be at least four months before a trial will be set and says Kardashian hasn’t really done anything to speed things along.

“I don’t want to use the word ‘uncooperative,’ but they are not making the process easier,” said Humphries’ divorce lawyer, Marshall Waller, according to E!

Waller has requested business records from Kris Jenner, which he has yet to receive and needs in order for the deposition to proceed.  The information Waller seeks is part of an effort to prove the couple’s 72-day marriage was a fraud.

“To say I am frustrated is an understatement,” said Laura Wasser, Kardashian’s divorce lawyer. “I’m at a loss to figure out what the holdup is. They had a prenup and were married 72 days.”

Wasser said her client has already incurred $250,000 in legal fees, which she plans to bill to Humphries.

The couple’s short-lived marriage began in August 2011 and ended when Kardashian filed for divorce on Oct. 31, citing irreconcilable differences.

Kenny G Files for Divorce

After being separated from his wife for seven months, Kenny G has decided to file for divorce.

The 56-year-old jazz musician, whose real name is Kenneth Bruce Gorelick, has cited irreconcilable differences in his Aug. 9 petition for divorce from his wife of 20 years, Balynda Helene Benson-Gorelick.

Benson-Gorelick was the one to file for legal separation in January, also citing irreconcilable differences. She has requested full physical custody of the couple’s young child, Noah, 14, while Kenny G is asking for joint custody.

Perhaps the couple’s divorce will go smoothly, as the pair drafted a prenuptial agreement at the time of their marriage in 1992. However, having a prenuptial agreement in place does not automatically mean all the details will be upheld.
