Last week, an 80-ton crane tipped over at a boat ramp in St. Augustine, just over 40 minutes away from Flagler Beach. The St. Johns Fire Rescue stated that the crane had toppled over at the Vilano boat ramp located along the Vilano Causeway just after 10:30 a.m. The crane had been working on a dock when its crane end tipped into the water and pulled the truck cab nearly 30 feet into the air. News 4 Jax has photos of the accident scene showing the front of the truck lifted up, pointing towards the sky and the crane arm in the water.
Thankfully, the crane operator was able to climb down from the truck cab without sustaining any injuries but another individual who was also working on the dock suffered a minor injury when the crane tipped. That individual was transported to Flagler Hospital for treatment and was later released.
The news source said that a St. Johns County spokesman issued a statement saying that the crane was working for a contractor who was constructing a boat dock/lift for St. Johns County Fire Rescue. The company hired for the job, Beyel Brothers Crane and Rigging, owned the crane and was subcontracted by Saboungi to complete the dock work.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Was Called to the Scene of the Accident

After the crane toppled, OSHA arrived at the accident site to conduct an investigation. Another crane operator who was also working at the site at the time of the incident said that the “crane should have been able to handle the steel posts it was working with at the time.” However, until the investigation is complete, we won’t know what caused the crane to tip or why it wasn’t able to handle the steel posts. Unfortunately, this isn’t the only time Beyel Brothers have had an accident occur. Apparently, they were hit with two fines back in 2012, one for the amount of $2,900 and the other for $7,000. The company allegedly settled a wrongful death lawsuit out of court back in 2013 after an accidental tugboat drowning occurred in Central Florida.
Beyel Brothers have not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the incident but you can expect that more details will be provided once the investigation has concluded.
