A family from Harrisburg Pike in Carlisle was recently involved in a tragic accident that resulted in multiple deaths and injuries. York Dispatch reported that on March 23rd, Brandon Rayhart,32, was operating a Ford Mustang and traveling with Jennifer Edler 26 and their two children when he crossed the center line on the 200 block of York Road and into the path of an oncoming Ford Escape that was being driven by Daniel Miller, 53, of Wellsville.
When Deputy Coroner Kayla Starner and Chief Deputy Claude Stabley arrived on the scene, they pronounced Edler and Rayhart dead along with their three-year-old daughter Destiny Rayhart, 3. Their five-year-old son did survive the crash, however, he had to be flown to a local hospital for treatment. Miller also survived the unfortunate accident and was also transported to the hospital. The news source was not able to comment on the conditions of the two survivors.
Police confirmed that both Edler and Brandon Rayhart were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the collision, but the children were in their car seats.
Sadly, the parents occupying the Mustang along with their 3-year-old daughter didn’t survive the crash, however, their 5-year-old son did and was flown to a nearby hospital.
Although officials did not disclose what caused the Mustang to veer into oncoming traffic, there are a number of reasons why this incident may have transpired. One of those reasons may be because the driver became distracted at some point. When traveling with children in the car, we sometimes let things deter our attention away from the road which then contributes to making the roadway more dangerous for everyone.
How to reduce the chances of driving distracted with children in the car?
So, if you happen to have children and are looking for ways to reduce the chances of getting distracted by them while driving, consider the following tips:
- Bring a portable DVD player with you for your children to watch on or another device such as a tablet that has movies already downloaded to occupy their attention. You can also play music they enjoy that will keep them entertained.
- Bring activity bags. According to the Decide to Drive, small children enjoy activity bags containing items such as books, magnetic travel board games, and other fun goodies.
- Take frequent breaks. If you are traveling for a summer vacation or have a long day planned that requires you to travel, be sure to take breaks so that children can stretch their legs and get out some excess energy they might have.
- Have another adult come with you. If you are traveling with young children, especially babies, it is always helpful to have another adult traveling with you who can tend to the kids while you focus on driving.
It is important that motorists today take every precaution possible to avoid engaging in distracted driving. With the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting that approximately nine people are being killed in these types of accidents and 1,000 suffering injuries each day in the U.S., it is important you do all that you can to be as attentive and careful as possible when behind the wheel of a vehicle.
