Alabama Mother Likely to Lose Custody of 2-Year-Old Son After Beating Him with a Brick
An Alabama woman is currently being held in the Walker County Jail with a bond set at $250,000 after she was accused of beating her two-year-old son with a brick and choking him [Source: Al.com]. Deputies with the Walker County Sheriff’s Office said they received a call regarding a small child being assaulted in the Goodsprings area. As they were responding to the call, they found the child being rushed to the hospital by 33-year-old Melody Smith, the child’s mother.
Officials then intercepted the child and had him flown to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham.
The two-year-old was placed in the hospital’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Walker County Sheriff’s Investigator Carl Carpenter said that the child had been struck multiple times in the head with the brick and “was in and out of consciousness when deputies and medics found him. At one point [the child] wasn’t breathing.” While there were “indications of hypoxia,” it isn’t clear if the child suffered permanent damage. Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR) has opened an investigation into the matter.
After investigators spoke with Smith regarding the incident, she informed them that “the devil made her do it.”
