“Every day, about 660,000 people in the United States are using their cell phones while driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.” Apple is looking to help reduce this number with their new iOS feature that is expected to arrive in next Apple update.
Would you consider yourself as one of those drivers who is always tempted to pick up your phone while driving when a text comes through? If you answered yes, you probably aren’t alone, and Apple may have a solution to help destroy this urge that causes distracted driving. Drivers who use their cell phones have contributed to the growing number of car accidents that occur on the roadways and Apple is looking for a way to put an end to it. Accident lawyers all across the country can probably vouch for this as they are out helping victims who have become injured from the distracted driving accidents that continue to occur.
Apple’s new iOS update will attempt to help reduce the number of distracted drivers out there as it will limit a driver who attempts to use their phone.
According to the Miami Herald, there is going to be a new feature on the iOS 11 update that is going to discourage drivers from using their cell phones while operating their vehicle. The new feature that will come along with the iOS 11 update is called the “Do Not Disturb While Driving” feature. The phone will use the Bluetooth or Wi-Fi Doppler effect to determine how fast you are going and that will decide if you are permitted to use your phone.
Perhaps if drivers can’t use their phones, they won’t be inclined to do so and that could result in a more safer and hazard free drive for everyone. In 2015 alone, 3,477 deaths and 391,000 injuries resulted from distracted driving. And can you get guess what form of distraction is listed as the most common form? Texting.

What exactly can we expect with the new Apple iOS 11 update?

Some of the features you might see once the update goes into effect, and cell phone users update their phone, will include:

  • If your phone goes into the “Do Not Disturb While Driving” mode, the screen will go blank and you will have limited access to your phone and the apps on it.
  • Certain people you choose will receive a notification automatically stating that you are driving and will respond later.
  • You won’t receive notifications unless you set up a feature that allows someone who is trying to contact you. They can reply back to your automatic message with “urgent” and they will be patched through.
  • The feature can be disabled if you indicate that you are a passenger.
  • The new update will not affect Apple CarPlay as that works with voice commands which would result in hands free cellphone usage anyway.

Are there kinks with the new update?

Based on the information shared by both the Miami Herald and CNN Money, one thing that might get in the way of the feature actually working is that someone who is a passenger in the vehicle can disable it if they indicate they are a passenger. So, does this mean a driver could ultimately lie and claim they are a passenger just to use their cellphone?
Some studies have revealed that driving while texting is nearly as dangerous as driving while drunk. Perhaps this feature might be what our society needs until the urge to answer a text or check our social media updates have died down and we are able to focus more on the road and less on the screen on our phones.
And if you ever become the victim of a distracted driving accident or already have, it would be wise of you to hire a local accident attorney who can help you claim the compensation you rightfully deserve.
