Divorces are often complex matters that are difficult and stressful for both parties to get through. The reason being is that many share assets, own property together, and have kids, all matters that must be addressed and settled. But, that’s generally where the trouble begins. It isn’t exactly easy for couples who once made all decisions together to make them on their own. In many divorce cases, couples often disagree on many of the pressing matters that must be handled, which not only makes the process more difficult to get through, but also delays the divorce from being finalized.
In recent news, we are learning that Hollywood stars Angelina Jolie, 43, and Brad Pitt, 54, continue on with their divorce battle as there are still issues left to be resolved. Pitt and Jolie met back in 2003 and finally married in 2014. But, in 2016, they separated because of “irreconcilable differences.” The separated couple, who now have six children together, are faced with some of the obstacles many couples face when they choose to file for divorce, one being child support.
People Magazine stated that the couple is now sharing different opinions on the amount of child support that has already been paid. While Jolie’s divorce attorneys allege that “Pitt has not been paying meaningful child support since their 2016 separation,” Pitt begs to differ. According to his team of divorce attorneys, “the actor has contributed $1.3 million to support Jolie and the kids, as well as an $8 million loan to help her buy her current home.”
But, because the two have neglected to come to an agreement on the matter, Jolie’s attorneys say she plans to request child support through the court system. And according to a divorce lawyer who is not involved with the case, if she were to go through with this, her finances would be made public. The lawyer says, “people of such fame typically handle the matter in private arbitration to keep details of their lives under wraps.” Apparently, Jolie may not be too concerned about that.
If Jolie does follow through with the request, she will need to prove why she needs the support along with what her children’s reasonable needs are. And that can become difficult to determine as children of such wealthy and well-known stars often receive “extraordinary” luxuries.
It was also reported that Jolie is requesting bifurcation, which would allow the couple to finalize their divorce prior to settling their financial and custody issues, says People Magazine. Although Pitt allegedly notified Jolie’s attorneys that he had the intent to request bifurcation, she was the one to make the first move. Many individuals request bifurcation so that they can carry on with their lives without still having ties with their ex-spouse.
