Here’s what happened and whether the students are expected to make a full recovery.

Science experiments are one type of assignment most students can admit they enjoy as they are given the opportunity to get hands-on with their learning. Unfortunately, a chemical experiment went wrong in a science lab in Merrol Hyde Magnet School in Hendersonville located just under an hour away from Nashville, TN. According to WSMV, a fire broke out after high school students were conducting an experiment involving them holding different salts over a Bunsen burner to demonstrate how flames change different colors depending on the elements.

After the fire broke out, the school was evacuated and the principal of the school, Darren Frank, confirmed that eight students had sustained injuries along with one science teacher. Four of those victims were transported to the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital and the remaining victims were taken to TriStar Hendersonville Medical Center. The incident occurred last Wednesday, May 9thand all those that were harmed by the fire were expected to be released from the hospital that same night.

Officials stated that they do not believe what happened was intentional. Hendersonville Fire Chief Scotty Bush also told the news source that he doesn’t know “if you can ever prevent things from happening 100 percent. Accidents occur. That’s why they are called accidents.” Bush reported that the most serious injuries sustained were second-degree burns to the arms and face. A student who attends the school spoke out on the matter and stated that “just knowing they are going to be okay is the best news you can get from the situation.”

As mentioned, after the fire broke out, officials did evacuate the building which consisted of elementary, middle, and high school students. The students were then dismissed and fans were set up throughout the school to help circulate the air. The school was scheduled to reopen on Thursday after the air quality levels were said to be good.

Although it isn’t common for accidents to occur at school, they sometimes do and those students who wind up being involved in the incident are often left with minor to severe injuries. And even though it might be an accident indicating that it wasn’t intentional, the parents of these children are generally entitled to file a claim so that their child’s medical bills along with any other incurred expenses are covered. Some common types of accidents that occur in schools aside from the type described above include:

  • Accidents with doors, such as a child getting a finger or hand stuck in one.
  • Sports incidents resulting in a head or other type of bodily injury.
  • Food poisoning
  • Defective equipment that injured your child.
  • Another student or staff member intentionally harmed your child.
