That driver is now faced with a DUI manslaughter charge.
Beverly J, Gran, 80, and her husband, Nicholas Michael DeSanta,74, were walking back from the beach near 118thAvenue in Treasure Island, not too far from Tampa, FL when they were struck by a driver suspected of being drunk just a few days ago. The couple was transported to an area hospital where they later died. The driver, Aleem Reezan Temon Hamid, 38, of Land O’ Lakes, was behind the wheel of the Ford Explorer that slammed into the elderly couple around 6:45 p.m. Rather than stopping to check on the wellbeing of the two people he had hit, Hamid drove off.
It wasn’t long before Treasure Island Police officers located Hamid less than a mile away from the accident on Park Place near 105thAvenue. He was still in the driver’s seat and showed signs of impairment. Officers said he was uncooperative and refused to submit to a field sobriety test that would determine his blood alcohol content, BAC, level. Hamid was then arrested and booked into the Pinellas County Jail. He is currently facing two felony counts of DUI manslaughter, two felony counts of leaving a fatal scene, and a charge of refusing a breath, urine, or blood test. The Tampa Bay Times reported that he was being held in lieu of a $200,150 bond.
Hamid Has Been in Trouble with the Law in the Past
Unfortunately, this arrest isn’t Hamid’s first. Back in 2003, he was arrested in Tampa, FL and charged as “a habitual offender for driving with a revoked license.” The source stated that he pleaded guilty to that charge. In 2016, Hamid was charged with DUI in Hillsborough County and later had the charge reduced to reckless driving. In this case, Hamid pleaded no contest and was found guilty.
The fact is, about “one-third of all drivers arrested or convicted of drunk driving are repeat offenders,” according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving so it doesn’t come as a surprise that Hamid engaged in the illegal act even after he had been charged with the crime in the past.
Who Were Beverly J. Gran and Nicholas Michael DeSanta?
Gran, who was originally from Kentucky, moved to Florida in 1971. She had worked as a home health nurse in Sebring and was retired. The source highlighted that she had a love for horses and even rode a horse named Prince. DeSanta was a Vietnam War veteran and was a tunnel rat who went on underground missions. Many of his friends spoke out about the type of man he was and all had nothing but good things to say. Many said he was very generous and would often volunteer at a local American Veterans post.
