The thing about auto accidents is that while we prepare and take the necessary precautions to prevent one from happening, not all can be avoided. Just a few weeks ago, a tragic accident occurred on SR-82 in Lehigh Acres, just a few minutes away from Fort Myers, that left two people dead and another with an injury. It was just before 1:30 p.m. when James David Williams, 66, was driving his 2016 Dodge Ram and carrying a load of lumber [Source: News Press].
Unfortunately, part of the load spilled onto SR-82 just east of Rod and Gun Club Road and in front of a Mitsubishi Eclipse being driven by 25-year-old Cameron Matthew Goltry. Goltry attempted to move his vehicle out of the path of the lumber, but instead, ended up swerving across the centerline and into the oncoming path of a 2016 Kia Forte. The Kia was being driven by Antonio Abreu Lopez, 32.
Sadly, the impact from that accident resulted in Goltry’s death. And a passenger in Lopez’s vehicle who has been identified as Joel Cervera Lopez, 24, was killed shortly after being transported to Lehigh Regional Hospital. Although Antonio Lopez and another one of his passengers, Mireya Lopez Ramos, 53, survived the accident, they did suffer injuries and were taken to Lee Memorial Hospital.
Although Williams was not charged at the scene of the accident, police stated that charges were pending.
In more recent news, another tragic accident occurred that left the Edison Bridge in Fort Myers closed for several hours [Source: News Press]. According to Fort Myers Police, 19-year-old Ryan David Schneider died as a result of the crash. He had relocated from Pennsylvania to Fort Myers just three weeks prior to the accident and was said to be the cause of the multi-vehicle crash that took his life. Officials stated that Schneider was believed to be speeding and driving too fast for conditions. Two other motorists who had been involved in the accident suffered minor injuries. Because of the impact of the crash, the vehicles involved ended up in the north and southbound lanes of the bridge which is what led to the entire bridge being closed for such a lengthy period of time.
