New York City, NY – Janet Jackson has escaped to New York City with her six-month-old son, Eissa, after filing for divorce from Wissam Al Mana.

A source told People magazine that Jackson recently flew to the big apple with her son, her bodyguard, and a handful of other people. Despite the recent announcement of her split from Al Mana, she made sure to make it to her business meetings in New York City for her upcoming tour.

People had previously reported that the couple’s amicable split was not just for show, with Al Mana even referring to his estranged wife as “the most beautiful person in the world.” A Jackson family friend revealed that even though they filed for divorce, they still have a strong friendship with no fighting between them.

The two plan to work out a co-parenting schedule that will give each parent equal amount of time with their son. They have both been seen bonding separately with Eissa, and the family friend shared that this is no surprise considering they are both very disciplined and already have the baby on a very strict schedule.

While Janet Jackson’s peaceful split from Al Mana is certainly admirable, this is not always the case. If your spouse does not agree with your decision to divorce, then you have what is considered a contested divorce.

Here are some tips for dealing with a contested divorce in New York:

Get a qualified divorce attorney on your side.

While a contested divorce can get ugly very quickly, it doesn’t have to. Enlist the services of a reputable and respected divorce lawyer in New York City before moving forward. This will save you from having to deal with the many potential complications in a divorce, and ensure that you take all the necessary steps for the court to grant your request for a divorce – regardless of what your spouse wants.

Satisfy New York’s residency requirements.

According to NYCourts.gov, you can meet the residency requirements by one of the following:

  • Either you or your spouse must have lived in New York for two consecutive years before filing for divorce.
  • At least one of you have been living in New York for one year before filing for divorce, and either got married in New York, lived in New York as a married couple, or the grounds for filing for divorce occurred in New York.
  • Both parties are New York residents on the day the divorce case was filed, and the reason for filing happened in New York.

Establish the grounds for divorce.

If you prove your spouse was at fault, the court will honor your request for a divorce despite your partner’s objection. Legally acceptable reasons for a divorce in New York include:

  • Abandonment: If your spouse left without your consent and has been gone one or more years.
  • Adultery: If you can prove your spouse committed adultery at some point during your marriage.
  • Cruel and inhuman treatment: If your spouse put you mentally or physically in danger at some point in the last five years.
  • Imprisonment: If your spouse has been in prison for three or more years during your marriage.

Going through a divorce is emotionally draining on its own without having to deal with all of the legalities. USAttorneys.com has plenty of reputable divorce attorneys in New York City that will make the divorce process much easier on you.
