Kentucky Divorce Rate Among Highest in Nation

KENTUCKY – According to a US Census Bureau report, the Kentucky divorce rate is now 13 per thousand.

The report also found that in 2009, couples living in the South had higher rates of divorce than in other regions of the country. The rates were 10.2 per 1,000 for men and 11.1 per 1,000 for women.

The national divorce rate was 9.2 for men and 9.7 for women. In contrast, men and women in the Northeast had the lowest rates of divorce, 7.2 and 7.5 respectively.

The statistics are from a report titled Marital Events of Americans: 2009, which examines marriage and divorce in America.

The report is the first of its kind to describe characteristics of marital events among Americans ages 15 and older using data from the 2009 American Community Survey (ACS).

“Divorce rates tend to be higher in the South because marriage rates are also higher in the South,” said Diana Elliott, a family demographer at the Census Bureau. “In contrast, in the Northeast, first marriages tend to be delayed and the marriage rates are lower, meaning there are also fewer divorces.”

The report also showed that in 2009, 14 states had divorce rates significantly above the US average, ranging from 10.0 to 13.5 per 1,000, Kentucky being one of them.
