Thursday was a devastating day for several families in the state of West Virginia after a fatal tractor-trailer accident occurred involving multiple vehicles. According to several news outlets, including WVVA, 52-year-old James Crandall of Reesville, OH was behind the wheel of the double-trailer that was heading south on I-77 that caused the accident. As Crandall was making his way down the interstate, he crashed into two Virginia Parkway Authority vehicles and three men who had been standing nearby.
The news outlet stated that The Beaver Volunteer Fire Department, Bluestone Valley Fire Department, Ghent Volunteer Fire Department and the Princeton Rescue Squad all responded to the accident which occurred near mile marker 23 at around 3:42 p.m. Two medical helicopters also arrived along with four ambulances. Sgt. C.F. Kane with the West Virginia State Police stated that one of the men, Nathan Thompson, 32, of Kegley was pronounced dead at the scene. The two other men, who have been identified as Ethan Kestner, 19, of Princeton and Richard Lambert, 21, of Kegley were in critical but stable condition as a result of the incident.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was uninjured.
The tragic accident caused all but one lane on I-77 to shutdown which led to major delays. About an hour after the incident transpired, traffic was said to have been backed up more than four miles. Governor Jim Justice and First Lady Cathy Justice commented on the fatal truck collision saying, “We are absolutely devastated and heartbroken after learning about this tragic accident. Please join us in praying for the family, friends, and co-workers of these three men. It is an extremely sad day for West Virginia.”
WV News said that officers with the West Virginia State Police Turnpike Detachment were investigating the crash. As of right now, possible charges are pending, however, none have been filed against the truck driver.
