It was during the early evening hours on April 6th when two friends, 13-year-old Rylee Simmons and 12-year-old Hailey Locke, were walking near the intersection of Quintette Road and Lake Carrington in Escambia County. As the two kids were walking along the road, they were struck from behind by the driver of a Ford Escape, reports WEAR TV. Officials would later learn that the driver behind the wheel of the Ford was 58-year-old Robert Etheridge II.
After the accident, the two children were rushed to the hospital in critical condition, however, Etheridge did not remain at the scene of the incident. It wasn’t until later that Etheridge contacted the Florida Highway Patrol and reported that he thought he had hit a deer. While Etheridge was initially charged with two counts of leaving the scene of a crash with injuries, WEAR TV reported that his charges were later upgraded to leaving the scene of an accident involving a death after Simmons passed away from his injuries.
News Break says that Simmons’ family made the difficult decision of taking him off life support. Although the 13-year-old was unable to survive his injuries, Locke was still at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola recovering. As for Etheridge, he was being held on a $30,000 bond, however, First Judicial Circuit Judge Jennie Kinsey raised his bond to $250,000 “after listening to arguments from prosecutors, the defense, and the Florida Highway Patrol.”
