Construction companies are required to comply with state and federal safety standards to ensure construction sites and the equipment being used doesn’t pose as a risk to workers and the public. Unfortunately, two companies failed to adhere to these standards when they allowed unauthorized work to be performed overnight and their workers neglected to properly secure the equipment being used. As a result of the companies’ negligence, a 20-year-old lost his life.
According to Florida personal injury lawyer Jed Kurzban with Kurzban Kurzban Tetzeli & Pratt, the attorney who is responsible for securing the favorable outcome, the 20-year-old had been driving on the highway when he lost control of his vehicle and collided with a boom crane whose hook was hanging from its equipment. Because the construction equipment was improperly secured, the driver suffered fatal injuries after colliding with it. Thankfully, attorney Jed Kurzban was able to recognize the two construction companies for their negligence and closed the case with a $2.3 settlement.
Florida Hits Record High for Work Zone Crashes
In 2016, Florida was recognized for having the 2nd highest number of fatal traffic crashes in work zones in the nation, according to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). In 35% of those accidents, workers were present in the work zone and in 44% of the accidents, serious injuries were suffered. Although the FDOT recognizes that “work zone fatalities make up approximately three percent of overall fatalities and two percent of serious injuries,” Florida’s transportation and traffic safety partners are looking for ways to make roadways safer around work zones.
