Domestic violence is a consistent problem for individuals who have to live with an abusive spouse. It can also occur in other living arrangements where one person consistently mistreats another.
Principal from Southwest Ranches high school arrested for beating another man
The incident took place in Miramar, Florida, which is southwest of the city of Fort Lauderdale. The police believe that another male who was in the principal’s residence got into a physical altercation with him. The victim stated that the suspect was arguing with him, then grabbed him and threw him to the ground. Moments later, the suspect ran and left the residence in fear.
An initial examination showed that the victim had bruising on his back and neck, and a bloody ear.
Students and parents at the suspect’s high school were surprised to hear that the principal, a generally calm and mild mannered man, would be arrested for such a crime. The Archdiocese of Miami, which runs the principal’s school in Southwest Ranches, said that the principal was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation by the Miramar police. A hearing with the judge assigned to the case was scheduled for the following week.
The principal was involved in another incident with a former student who was expelled from his school years earlier. The other man involved in that situation got into an argument with him in a parking lot after a traffic incident.
The school where the principal worked is located in the western part of Broward County.
Domestic violence and criminal defense
A domestic violence charge can be even more serious than most other criminal cases. This is because domestic violence courts are designed to assist victims and give defendants less procedural rights than they would have in standard criminal courts. Sentences also tend to be more severe for a domestic violence incident than a similar charge such as assault or battery in the criminal courts, which is usually charged as a misdemeanor.
Because of the possibility of jail time and other serious consequences, it is important to get help from a defense attorney who is familiar with the local court system. The ability to present a defense case and ensure that the government is following all relevant procedures to bring criminal charges and prosecute a defendant is an important civil right.
