A NY garbage truck driver is facing some rather serious charges after he lost control over his vehicle on June 9thwhich resulted in him sideswiping almost a dozen vehicles.

It was around 5: 30 a.m. on Saturday morning when Anthony Castaldo, 40, was operating a Viking Sanitation truck, heading east on 60thStreet near 19thAvenue in Mapleton, Brooklyn. He told police he had lost control of the vehicle which then led to him plowing into at least nine cars and then crashing into a building at 1869 60thStreet, according to NBC New York.  But when officers initially arrived at the scene, Castaldo wasn’t waiting around to give his statement. In fact, he allegedly pushed an officer and tried to flee on foot. NYPD later detained Castaldo and arrested him.
Turns out, the reason the garbage truck operator lost control of the vehicle was because he was intoxicated. Police stated that his speech was slurred, his eyes were watery, and his breath smelled of alcohol. To top it off, he was unsteady on his feet, which is what led officers to believe he was under the influence. But, if you let Castaldo tell his side of the story, he said he had fallen asleep at the wheel. After the incident transpired, Castaldo was transported to Maimonides Medical Center with minor injuries. An officer who was chasing Castaldo had fallen while in pursuit of the truck driver and needed treatment for his injuries as well.
Castaldo is now facing charges for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, reckless endangerment, and reckless driving. He was released from police custody after posting $5,000 in bail. A spokesman for Viking Sanitation spoke out regarding the incident that left several vehicles damaged and said the company “has a long track record of safety and we hold ourselves to high standards, including random drug testing for drivers.”
The spokesman went on to say that “It appears that this driver failed to adhere to our standards and he was immediately suspended as part of the ongoing investigation of this serious incident.”
