As fun and enticing as trampoline parks may be, you may want to think twice before you allow your child to go into one.

Every kid loves to jump around in bounce houses and trampoline parks. The fact is, it’s fun for them, that is, until an accident occurs, and they suffer an injury. While most parents allow their kids to enter a trampoline park and don’t think twice about them sustaining an injury, you may want to after you read this story.
Alexandra Karob-Volpina, 13, enjoyed going to a trampoline park in south Florida. She also enjoyed doing ballet and “showing off her skills as a gymnast.” But all that changed after one small incident occurred at the trampoline park she was at. It was about two years ago when Karob-Volpina attended the Off the Wall trampoline park in Coconut Creek. She said she was jumping when someone ran by her and jumped on her ankle when she was landing, according to NBC Miami.

That incident sent Alexandra to the urgent care center.

Karob-Volpina had broken her ankle, and the source says her scar is still visible today. During the time the teen spent recovering from her injury, she couldn’t do any of the fun things she once could. She also recalls how difficult this time was for her family. As unfortunate as Alexandra’s injury was, she isn’t the only family who has dealt with this. NBC Investigators began reviewing 911 calls that were made from trampoline parks located in south Florida and in the past two years, nearly 300 calls were made. The calls ranged from injuries sustained to kids falling. The source also highlighted that in at least 70 of the reported incidents, paramedics showed up.

In one of the calls, a four-year-old sprained his ankle and in another, “a six-year-old was left bleeding after someone jumped on top of her.”

While many of the families whose children sustain an injury carry on with their lives and hope that their child makes a full recovery, others feel obliged to take legal action against these parks. And that is what Alexandra’s family did. The family hired a Florida personal injury attorney and filed suit against Off the Wall as they believe the company didn’t have adequate staff that could have prevented it from occurring. Their lawsuit is currently one of 12 that has been filed against the company for the injuries a visitor sustained. The company, however, responded to the suit with one of their own.
Because Alexandra’s father signed a waiver where he agreed “not to take legal action if anything were to happen to his daughter, even in the case of death or negligence,” the company decided to sue him. And many other trampoline parks also require a similarly worded waiver to be signed as well. The news outlet said, “By signing it, parents are basically agreeing to give up their child’s right and their right to recover damages in a lawsuit that results from injuries or death.”
But Alexandra’s family and their attorney plan to stand firm on their decision to sue and fight for the damages they believe should be awarded. The fact is, many personal injury attorneys agreed that “these waivers don’t give companies a license to be negligent, which is a basis for a lawsuit.”
With that in mind, you may want to think twice about going to a trampoline park where accidents tend to happen as well as sign the waiver they provide that prevents you from taking legal action even if your child dies as a result of an incident.
