The Smart Way To Get Divorced

Ending a marriage is a difficult decision, but often the right one. Unfortunately, once the decision to divorce has been made, couples often make a painful process more difficult by clinging to hard feelings and refusing to compromise.

At the Law and Mediation Office of Helene Bernstein, PLLC, Brooklyn family law attorney Helene Bernstein helps individuals navigate divorce or resolve other family law concerns with a focus on reducing stress and landing in a good place for everyone to move forward. Whenever possible, Ms. Bernstein leads her clients through mediation, a collaborative divorce process or negotiates settlements rather than litigate. This allows clients to retain more control over changes to everyone’s lives.

Experience That Makes A Difference

Ms. Bernstein established her Brooklyn law firm in 1995 to provide legal representation that is tailored to the unique needs of each client. She handles traditional divorces in which resolutions are reached through litigation, but she encourages clients to negotiate agreements using collaborative law techniques as an alternative to litigation.

Ms. Bernstein also serves as a neutral third-party mediator. In mediation, divorcing couples can be represented by their lawyers and the objective is to reach agreement on custody, property division and other issues with help from Ms. Bernstein. She can also serve as a consultant and review attorney for an individual who has reached agreements through mediation led by someone else.

She knows how to examine complex family law matters from every angle to find the best solution. She is an active member of the Family and Divorce Mediation Council of Greater New York, the New York Council on Divorce Mediation and FamilyKind, a nonprofit organization that provides support to families in transition due to separation or divorce.

As a former prosecutor for the Administration for Children’s Services, she has the courtroom knowledge necessary to try difficult cases in family court or Supreme Court in New York should doing so prove to be your best course of action.
