History
Ryan Smith & Carbine, Ltd. is one of Vermont's oldest and largest law firms. In December, 1945, the death of Major General Leonard F. Wing terminated the existence of Fenton, Wing & Morse, a partnership which had been in existence in Rutland, Vermont since 1922. On January 1, 1946, the surviving partners, Charles F. Ryan, R. Clarke Smith and John D. Carbine, associated themselves as Ryan Smith & Carbine. In 1973, the partnership was converted into the present Professional Corporation, Ryan Smith & Carbine, Ltd. ("RS&C").

Our state-wide practice includes Banking, Bankruptcy, Civil Litigation, Contractors' and Construction Liability, Corporate, Employment Law, Environmental Land Use Law, Estate Planning, Governmental Law, Health Care, Insurance Defense and Coverage, Intellectual Property, Limited Liability Company Law, Mediation Services, Medical Malpractice, Partnerships, Probate, Products Liability, Professional Malpractice, Public Utility, Real Estate, School Law, Securities, Ski Area Liability, Taxation, Trademarks and Copyrights and Workers Compensation. Trials in all State and Federal Courts. RS&C also represents clients in arbitration and mediation matters and before state agencies, boards and the state legislature.
Activities of the Members
RS&C has a long record of providing leadership in professional organizations, having provided six (6) presidents of the Vermont Bar Association, one (1) member of the Board of Governors of the American Bar Association, one (1) member of the Vermont Board of Bar Examiners, five (5) Fellows of the American College of Trial Lawyers, two (2) Fellows of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, one (1) member of the American Academy of Appellate Attorneys, two (2) have been recognized in The Best Lawyers in America publication and we have had many other honors conferred on our attorneys. Members have served and are serving on the Boards of Directors of local banks, corporations and business enterprises. The members have been active in all manner of community activities: the Rutland Regional Medical Center, Rutland Economic Development Corporation, Rutland Region Chamber of Commerce, College of St. Joseph, Green Mountain College, United Way, Vermont Achievement Center and many others.
