Work Experience

Ann seamlessly combines her passion for advocating for individuals with her love for bicycling culture in her legal practice. She is dedicated to representing injured individuals, with a particular focus on victims of bicycle crashes. Ann's legal journey began in 1995 when she gained invaluable courtroom experience as a criminal defense attorney at the Cumberland County Public Defender's Office in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Later, she transitioned to private practice, continuing her criminal defense work and handling high-stakes cases, including several death penalty trials. Notably, Ann was involved in the first North Carolina case to be presented to a jury on the grounds of a defendant's ineligibility for the death penalty due to intellectual disability in 2003.

Over time, Ann's professional path shifted towards personal injury and civil litigation, aligning with her burgeoning passion for bicycle advocacy. In 1998, she joined forces with Peter Wilborn, the founder of South Carolina Bike Law, to establish North Carolina Bike Law. This organization has since evolved into Bike Law, serving cyclists across the nation. Ann actively engages with bicycling groups and clubs statewide, educating members about their rights, responsibilities, and fostering a supportive bicycling culture. She regularly participates in and presents at the annual North Carolina Bicycle Summit, working tirelessly to promote bicycling, with a particular emphasis on women's bicycling. As a member of a local women's race team, Ann actively contributes to the cycling community. In her dedication to enhancing safety and enjoyment for all riders, she authored the Ride Guide—an invaluable resource that provides insights into North Carolina's bicycle-related rules of the road, designed for bicyclists, motorists, police officers, and anyone interested in understanding these regulations.

While Ann's commitment to bicycle advocacy is unwavering, her utmost priority remains assisting her clients during challenging times. She understands that most individuals strive to swiftly return to their normal lives rather than enduring prolonged litigation. Therefore, Ann and her dedicated staff work tirelessly and efficiently to achieve timely resolutions. However, when litigation becomes necessary, they tenaciously fight for their clients' best interests and overall success, ensuring their voices are heard and justice is pursued.
