With more than a decade of experience, Ian Shelton has an active commercial disputes practice with a focus on intellectual property and technology, complex commercial litigation, and appeals.
Ian is licensed in both Texas and California and has a national litigation practice. He routinely represents a broad range of corporate and individual clients in the following areas:
•complex commercial and technology disputes including business torts;
•intellectual property disputes including copyright, trade secret and trademark actions; and
•litigation counseling and strategy including dispositive and post-trial motions and appeals.
An experienced commercial litigator and trial attorney, Ian has litigated in a variety of state and federal courts across the country at both the trial and appellate levels. His extensive experience includes taking and defending depositions, arguing dispositive motions and appeals, and obtaining dismissal of claims seeking substantial monetary damages.
Ian’s extensive experience managing complex litigation matters covers a wide range of business issues and jurisdictions, including most recently representing an investment professional in a contentious multi-jurisdictional dispute with a venture capital fund in California, Delaware, and Texas, a small refinery challenging EPA agency action in the Ninth Circuit and D.C. Circuit, an international bank in a letter of credit dispute in the Central District of California, an investor in a fraudulent transfer and foreign judgment enforcement action in Los Angeles Superior Court, multiple claimants seeking recovery of economic losses associated with an oil spill in the Southern District of Texas, investors involved in green energy contract disputes in San Francisco Superior Court and the Southern District of California, and a large medical practice in a contract dispute in Los Angeles Superior Court, the California Court of Appeal and the California Supreme Court. He has also represented transnational companies in responding to US discovery and in ICSID international arbitration.
Prior to joining Eversheds Sutherland, Ian worked as an attorney for Los Angeles-based Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP. After law school, he worked as a law clerk for Judge Xavier Rodriguez in the Western District of Texas and for Judge Harold DeMoss in the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
Ian practices in Texas but has spent a significant portion of his career in California and is also a part of our Sacramento and San Diego offices, where he can work as needed on California matters.
