ABOUT J. Alexander S. Barrett

“Litigation is a tool for the resolution of disputes, but one fraught with risk, expense and unpredictability. We use the breadth and depth of our experience to develop strategies to achieve our clients’ objectives – striving to avoid litigation if that is wise, or vigorously pursuing their interests in court if that is where and how the matter needs to be resolved. In every case, we seek the best and most efficient resolution that allows us to add value to a client’s enterprise.”

In contentious and complex matters where lengthy and expensive courtroom proceedings seem inevitable, Alex’s experience in advising clients and both avoiding and engaging in litigation allows him to achieve clients’ objectives, while minimizing disruption and cost.

His path to a legal career began while working in banking for a few years after college. He was attracted by the work of lawyers doing transactions, litigating cases, and handling trust and estate matters. Alex became seriously interested in litigation during an appellate advocacy class for first year law students, and claims he has not looked back since. For over 25 years he has handled a variety of business and commercial matters in state and federal courts and arbitrations, ranging from complex trust and estate cases, individual and class action matters, shareholder, securities, product liability, employment, and real estate litigation, to contract cases and insurance coverage and claims matters. He recently completed an engagement by a major university concerning its withdrawal from an athletic conference. In addition to litigation, Alex maintains an active employment practice, focused on employers and their executives. His clients are as varied as the matters he handles and include entities and individuals involved in healthcare and human service, manufacturing, retailing, service industries, contracting, and education to name but a few. Alex enjoys a widespread reputation with his clients for his creativity and intuitive skills, as he approaches each matter with a view toward understanding their goals and developing the best strategy for achieving them.

Alex’s commitments to the community and region include his service as a member of the Board of Directors of Carolina Bank. He has chaired its Governance Committee and served on its Compensation Committee.

A fan of all sports, but particularly golf and college basketball, Alex is an avid wing shooter and sporting clays enthusiast.
