ABOUT John Philip Larochelle, Esq

Achieving outstanding results for my clients is worth the time that it takes to be thoroughly prepared for aggressive advocacy. I am a former Rhode Island state prosecutor who has represented clients in complex and highly sensitive litigation matters in Rhode Island Family Court and in District, Superior, Supreme and Federal Court in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

For all legal matters, I review the facts and evidence, researching the law that is applicable to those facts. Thereafter, I give great consideration to making strategic and tactical decisions specific for each case. I discuss with you my proposed strategy, remaining open-minded to your input. Throughout the process, I am happy to answer all of your questions so that you know our plan and what to expect.

I am the most competitive attorney I know. I perform well under pressure. I don't give up; I find a way to win. I never save anything for the swim back.

In Family Court, I have litigated many types of cases, including complex divorces, contentious child custody matters, and unusual visitation situations. I am a certified by the Rhode Island Family Court as a Guardian Ad Litem.

In Criminal defense advocacy, I apply my extensive criminal law knowledge and experience to representing clients in all criminal matters - from serious felonies such as murder, sex crimes, and distribution of controlled substances – to misdemeanor cases such as domestic assaults and traffic-related offenses. I have litigated over one hundred DUI cases.

At my most recent jury trial, which concluded on 27 September 2019 in Providence Superior Court, my co-counsel and I received a not-guilty verdict on all counts in a First Degree Sexual Assault case.

I represent clients in state and federal courts in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. I am admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States of America.

I have written and argued well-known cases before the Rhode Island Supreme Court, including prevailing against then-Attorney General Sheldon Whitehouse in the seminal case of Diane S. Cronan ex rel. State v. John J. Cronan 774 A.2d 866. I have also written and argued often-cited cases such as State v. Paull and State v. Chalk.

Call me at 401-421-4407 or 401-400-2227 to discuss your legal matter now at no cost.

After completing a B.S. in Finance and a B.A. in Economics, John P. Larochelle graduated Cum Laude from the University of Suffolk Law School in 1994. A few months later, immediately after being admitted to the Rhode Island bar, Attorney Larochelle began his legal career as a Special Assistant Attorney General for the Rhode Island Department of the Attorney General. Following his successful career as a prosecutor, in 1997 John founded his own law firm in downtown Providence, concentrating his practice in family court matters and in criminal defense.

John Larochelle has litigated criminal matters in Rhode Island Federal court, Massachusetts Federal court, and in every courthouse in Rhode Island and in Southeastern Massachusetts. In addition, in every Family Court in Rhode Island, John has successfully advocated all types of domestic law issues, including complex divorces, hotly contested custody battles, tough relocation hearings, and novel theories of law. John has also had success in major cases for which he wrote the appeals and orally advocated before the Rhode Island Supreme Court.

If reaching a favorable agreement for your case is possible, negotiation will be the first choice of how to get you the best result for your legal matter. This is especially true in resolving issues between separating parents who have a lifetime of co-parenting ahead of them. Negotiation is often the best option in the case of first-time criminal offenders. If, however, your rights are in danger of being diminished, John Larochelle will bring aggressive advocacy on your behalf in court. Whatever course of action you decide upon, John Larochelle will bring a prepared, strongly-argued presentation of your best case. Leading up to every court hearing, John Larochelle will provide you with a thorough explanation of every aspect of your specific situation - from the small details to the big-picture strategy.
