ABOUT Matthew I Barceleau, Esq.

Matthew was born and raised in El Paso, Texas and attended college at New Mexico State University where he double majored in Government and Criminal Justice, with a supplemental major in Law and Society. After graduating from NMSU in 2011, Matthew attended the University of New Mexico School of Law and obtained his Juris Doctor Degree in 2015. As a law student, Matthew served his class as a member of the Graduate and Professional Student Association Legislative Council. He also lead organizations such as the UNM Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild and Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity. Matthew served low-income clients through UNM’s Community Lawyering clinic and represented wrongfully convicted men and women as part of New Mexico’s Innocence and Justice Project.

Matthew was admitted to the State Bar of New Mexico in 2015 and joined the Second Judicial District Attorney’s Office where he prosecuted criminal cases involving domestic violence, DWI, and property crime. In addition to representing the State in the Mental Health Court program, he also served as the DA’s Office HEART prosecutor focusing on repeat domestic violence offenders. After leaving the DA’s Office Matthew went on to practice in the areas of insurance defense, governmental representation, civil rights defense, and commercial representation close to home in Las Cruces, NM. In 2017, Matthew was admitted to the United States District Court for the District of New Mexico. He currently practices in the areas of insurance defense, construction litigation, personal injury, and general litigation.
