ABOUT Matthew W. Naparty

Matthew Naparty is an owner and managing partner of Mauro Lilling Naparty LLP. He is routinely called upon for his appellate expertise in high-exposure and complex cases by major insurance companies, corporations, hospitals, individuals and other attorneys.

Since joining MLN in 2001, he has handled hundreds of significant motions and appeals in State and Federal Courts and is noted for several important decisions in the areas of medical malpractice, labor law and premises liability, including Beato v. Cosmopolitan Associates, LLC (2010) (limiting landowners liability for attack on premises and setting aside $6.75 million verdict and dismissing complaint); Cohen v. Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, 11 N.Y.3d 823 (2008)(limiting liability under Scaffold Law); Elias v. Bash (2008) (limiting duty owed by consulting physicians); Miraglia v. H&L Holding Corp. (2007) ($75 million pain and suffering award ultimately reduced to $10 million); and Espinal v. Melville Snow Contractors, Inc., 98 N.Y.2d 136 (2002) (defining and limiting scope of snow removal contractor's liability). Mr. Naparty also submitted an amicus curaie brief to the New York Court of Appeals on behalf of a Suffolk County Legislator in the landmark case Skelos v. Paterson (holding that Governor Paterson had authority to fill vacancy in office of Lieutenant-Governor by appointment).

In addition to briefing and arguing appeals, Mr. Naparty chairs the firm's Active Trial Monitoring Program where, unlike other monitoring counsel, MLN actively “partners” with and assists trial counsel in developing the overall trial strategy, preserving the record, making motions and providing an objective appellate perspective.

Prior to joining MLN, Mr. Naparty worked in various capacities for the New York State Appellate Division, Second Department. He has published on various topics relating to his practice and frequently educates industry professionals through lectures and seminars. In 2011, Mr. Naparty received Long Island Business News' coveted “40 Under 40” award, the publication's annual salute to 40 professionally rising individuals under the age of 40. He was selected by Super Lawyers for inclusion on the 2011 New York Rising Stars list. And he is an appointed member of the New York State Bar Association's Committee on Courts of Appellate Jurisdiction. Mr. Naparty earned his Juris Doctorate, dean's list, from St. John's University and his Bachelor of Science from Brooklyn College.
