During my 43 years of trial practice, I have come to believe trials are very much like battles. A trial lawyer needs to know when to attack, who to attack, what weapons to use in the battle and when to hold your ground, and most importantly when to stop. Experience in the courtroom is the only place where these abilities are learned.
