Joe Corteguera grew-up in South Florida where his parents settled after fleeing their homeland of Cuba during the communist revolution. After high school, he moved to New Orleans, Louisiana where he studied and worked for many years. Mr. Corteguera attended Tulane University where he majored in biology while completing pre-med studies and a Bachelor of Science degree. He also majored in sociology and completed a Bachelor of Arts degree. He then began his graduate work at Tulane’s School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine where he majored in maternal and child health and health communication and education and completed a Master of Public Health degree.
From 1991 to 1993, Mr. Corteguera attended Southern Methodist University School of Law in Dallas where he obtained his Juris Doctor degree and began his practice of law with the Law Office of Domingo Garcia handling personal injury, criminal and family law matters and getting extensive trial experience in personal injury and criminal defense. In 1998, Mr. Corteguera and his family settled in Houston. He joined the law firm of Miller, Criaco & Kelly where he honed his skills in personal injury trial law during his ten years with the firm. In 2010, he resumed his association with the Law Office of Domingo Garcia and helped grow that firm’s Houston office.
Mr. Corteguera is fluent in Spanish and passionate about his clients’ cases and their right to a trial by jury. He is admitted to practice in all state courts in Texas and the federal Southern and Northern Districts of Texas. In 2002 Mr. Corteguera became Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He is among only 3% of lawyers licensed in Texas with this honor. Mr. Corteguera recently joined the Stern Law Group, but has worked in association with our firm in various capacities over the last 15 years. He brings with him over 20 years of experience in personal injury and favorable verdicts and settlements for thousands of his clients and nearly 100 jury trials. Mr. Corteguera litigates civil cases involving wrongful death & survival claims, medical malpractice, general negligence, motor vehicle negligence, trucking negligence, premise liability, products liability, employment, civil rights and insurance coverage.
When he is not working, Mr. Corteguera spends all of his free time with his wife of 21 years and his three teenage children attending their sporting and school events.
