A Utah native, Leonard “Len” McGee joined Robert J. Debry & Associates in 2006, first as the managing attorney in our St. George office, then as an associate in our Salt Lake office in 2008. Before joining our law firm, Len was insurance counsel for Allstate Insurance in Utah for six years. Prior to working with Allstate, Len was an Assistant Attorney General in the Utah Attorney General’s office, responsible for defending legal claims made against the State of Utah, its agencies, and local governments.
Len attended the University of Utah on a debate scholarship, where he served as student body president and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history and political science in 1975. He then earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Utah in 1978. During college, Len was a member of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity and the Beehive Honor Society. He was also active in Moot Court.
During his career, Len has tried more than 100 jury trials—both civil and criminal—and is the author of “Crime Victim Compensation” (Journal of Contemporary Law, Winter, 1979).
Len is also active as a presenter in legal seminars, having taught other attorneys in personal injury matters and trial technique for the last fifteen years.
After joining the U.S. Navy while in law school, Len served in the Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corp (JAG) for four years, acting as a prosecutor and as team leader of the Atlantic Fleet Drug Interdiction Team. After JAG, Len transferred to Naval Intelligence in the Reserves. He was recalled to active duty in 1991, serving aboard the USS Ranger as an intelligence analyst and mission briefer during the First Gulf War, for which he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal.
He was recalled to active duty again in 2003 for nine months, serving at the Pentagon as a targeting analyst and briefer and at the Office of Naval Intelligence as a Homeland Security analyst during the Second Gulf War, after which he was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal. Len retired from the U.S. Navy as a commander in 2004.
When he’s not in the office, he and his wife, Robin—who is a paralegal at the firm—enjoy spending time with their five children; being outdoors snowshoeing, kayaking, biking and hiking; and cheering on the Utes and the Utah Jazz.
Len has received an AV Preeminent® Martindale-Hubbell® Peer Review Rating™.
