ABOUT Terry B. Smith

Terry Smith is a highly experienced legal professional with more than 24 years of practice. She focuses on family law matters and has helped a significant number of individuals resolve complex divorce and child custody issues. As a former prosecutor, she brings a wealth of trial experience, and as the former director of the Governor's Office For Children, she has a deep understanding of the family law issues that affect children.

Terry Bays Smith is a 1989 graduate of the University Of Arizona, College of Law. After graduation, Ms. Smith served as a prosecutor for a period of eight years, thus has many years of aggressive trial experience. In 1998 Ms. Smith was selected by the Governor of Arizona to serve as his Director for the Governor's Office of Children. In this capacity, served as an interagency coordinator for all children, youth and family programs within the state; acted as a liaison between state government and community and neighborhood organizations serving children. Ms. Smith assisted the Governor's staff in evaluating and improving the effectiveness of state agencies and systems dealing with children and families. Ms. Smith served on the Governor. Juvenile Justice Reformation Commission, Interagency Coordinating Council For Infants Toddlers, Juvenile Justice Advisory Council, Arizona Safe Kids Coalition, Greater Phoenix Child Abuse Prevention Council and Arizona Juvenile Justice Commission as the Executive Director. Ms. Smith also served on the Joint Legislative Committee on School Safety, Court Improvement Project and Child Welfare Ad Hoc Committee.

In 1999, Ms. Smith formed a private practice focusing her practice in the area of family law, including divorce, paternity, child support, enforcement issues, legal decision making authority, relocation, grandparent rights and post decree modification matters. Ms. Smith is the managing family law attorney at Smith Law Office, P.C. where she is solely responsible for overseeing family law cases from the initial client consultation to the point of ultimate settlement or court litigation.

In addition to her work at Smith Law Office, P.C. Ms. Smith is a volunteer member of the Family Law Initiatives Committee. Ms. Smith has been a Judicial Performance Review team member since 2009.

In estate planning and probate practice areas, Ms. Smith assists you with solid recommendations that lead to your family's future financial security. When a probate administration becomes problematic, or a quarrel over an inheritance divides your family, she negotiates and litigates with equal proficiency, while remaining sensitive to your emotions at a difficult time in your life. She is currently a volunteer for Wills for Heroes Foundation Arizona. Ms. Smith is a member of the Estate Planning Section of the Arizona State Bar. She has prepared 100's of estate planning documents to include simple Wills, Powers of Attorney and Advance Directives. She has been at the helm in numerous probate cases, even arguing one case successfully in the Arizona Court of Appeals.
