William B. Grete joined the Firm as a member in 2017 and is the Leader of the Firm’s Healthcare Practice Group. He has worked in the Healthcare Industry for over 30 years as an accomplished legal healthcare executive and trusted advisor to governing boards, hospital and physician practice management executives, physician leaders and physician practice groups. He served as Vice President and General Counsel for Mississippi Baptist Health Systems in Jackson, Mississippi and was instrumental in the development of Baptist’s physician enterprise and integration strategy and the development of Baptist’s network of rural hospitals and health clinics.
Bill represents physicians and hospitals in the development and implementation of hospital/physician alignment strategies, contracting, joint ventures, long term employment agreements, group practice acquisitions and service line co-management agreements to improve coordination and efficiency of patient care delivery between physicians and hospital providers. He also is counselor to hospitals and physician groups on health care regulatory, compliance and related legal issues involving the operation of healthcare providers.
Bill’s practice focuses on:
•Health care fraud and abuse (Anti-Kickback and Stark Law)
•Corporate structure and governance issues for (1) tax exempt and community hospitals, (2) physician practice groups and (3) other healthcare providers and suppliers
•Physician and hospital joint ventures and significant combination transactions
•Professional services, service line co-management and employment agreements between hospitals and physicians
•Development of physician compensation formulas, including formulas designed for emerging payment model reforms (MACRA- MIPS and APMs)
•Legal and strategy development for rural healthcare providers (e.g., telehealth, critical access hospitals and rural health clinics)
•Representation of hospital and physician practice management and billing companies
•Regulatory and compliance matters including Medicare reimbursement issues and the defense of government investigations and audits
•Development and operation of effective corporate compliance programs
•Licensure and certificate of need (CON) for hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, clinical laboratories, home health agencies and other healthcare providers
•Hospital and physician group operations and management counsel
•HIPAA privacy/security
He received his J.D from Cumberland School of Law in Birmingham and LLM in Taxation from Georgetown University Law Center. He was a former law clerk for Judge B. John Williams of the United States Tax Court.
