A multiple vehicle crash in Prairieville, Louisiana left one person dead and injured several others.
Three vehicle crash begins with SUV swerving off of the road
The incident happened right around 3 pm on a Sunday at Airline Highway and Perkins Road. An initial investigation showed that a state police vehicle was driving northbound on Airline Highway when a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer going southbound began to veer off of the side of the road. The vehicle suddenly swerved back onto the road surface and went into the front of the police vehicle head on. A third vehicle rear ended the police vehicle after this first impact.
A 22 year old male who works for the Louisiana State Police Troop A was confirmed to be one of the victims that died in the crash. One of the other victims was hospitalized with severe injuries, although no other specific details were given. Emergency crews at the scene did not know what had initially caused the collision, or why the Trailblazer swerved off of the road. The woman driving the trailblazer did not have her seatbelt on, and she was ejected from the vehicle due to the impact.
Although police do not believe that anyone involved was intoxicated at the time of the accident, they collected blood samples as a precaution. Toxicology reports and a full accident investigation were still pending at the time of the news report.
Car crashes that cause fatalities
When someone dies in a motor vehicle accident, the best way for a family to get financial help with medical and funeral costs is to file a wrongful death lawsuit. This is a type of civil case that can be filed regardless of whether the government chooses to bring criminal charges against the person responsible for the death or not.
Certain family members who were financially dependent on the deceased person such as a spouse or child can bring the wrongful death case on their behalf. However, wrongful death laws vary slightly in each state, and there is a short statute of limitations. For these reasons, it is important to speak with a lawyer about the specifics of your situation and follow their advice related to how your case will proceed.
A wrongful death action works similar to other types of civil accident lawsuits. Your lawyer will have to essentially argue that another person or business was at fault for the injury and losses, and then prove their value through various forms of evidence and records.
