Miami, 24-Year-Old Charged with Vehicular Homicide a Year After Causing an Accident that Claimed a 7-Year-Old’s Life
It was last summer on Bird Road when the fatal accident transpired. Yamileth Miranda had been traveling in her Toyota Camry with her three-year-old daughter, Daisa, and her seven-year-old son, Christian. Officials say Miranda was trying to make a left turn onto Bird Road when she was hit by a Ford F-150 being driven by 24-year-old Melissa Vasquez [Source: Local 10 News].
While the speed limit on that particular stretch of road is set at 40 mph, officials say Vasquez’s truck was traveling at 82.7 mph at the moment of impact and 101.2 mph just one second before impact. While all occupants inside the Camry had been buckled in, the impact was so “violent” that the 7-year-old was ejected from the vehicle and decapitated. The three-year-old also suffered severe injuries which caused her to fall into a coma. The source says the child had to be placed on a ventilator for about four days.
As for Miranda, she also suffered injuries but managed to survive the deadly collision. Both vehicles involved in the crash were mangled. The source says that Vasquez also had two passengers traveling inside the vehicle with her, both of which survived the incident. Local 10 recently reported that Vasquez turned herself in to authorities on Wednesday and has been charged with vehicular homicide and three counts of reckless driving. The source says she “had nothing to say as she turned herself in.”
The news source says that the 7-year-old’s family has been waiting nearly a year for some sort of justice and they believe their “prayers may be getting answered.”
