A motorcyclist and his passenger were involved in a horrific accident back in May after an SUV clipped the bike sending both riders airborne.

It was around 5:30 p.m. when William R. Westervelt, 53, of Bunnell and Kimberly Dawn Boyer, 48, of Palm Coast were riding south on US.1 near the Atlantis shopping center in Bunnell [Source: Flagler Live].  Tyler P.C. Anderson, 25, happened to be driving back from his new job in Port Orange in his Chevy Tahoe SUV and was attempting to turn left to get across US.1. As he got into the center to make his turn, he had to wait for a vehicle that was in the turning lane along with a semi that was approaching.
After the vehicle turned and the semi passed, Anderson thought he was in the clear to go but failed to see Westervelt and his passenger traveling directly behind the truck. So, when he went to make the turn, he struck the bike, knocking both riders off. Because of the serious condition both riders were in, both had to be transported to the hospital. Boyer was air-lifted to Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach. Westervelt was taken to the hospital by ground to Florida Hospital Flagler. Sadly, the source stated that there is a good chance Boyer will lose a leg because it was severely injured.
Although both riders are expected to be okay, it is clear they are going to need a significant amount of time to recover. The news outlet reported that Anderson did remain at the accident scene and was cooperating with authorities. His SUV only sustained minor damage to the front left light. The Florida Highway Patrol trooper who responded to the call issued a citation to Anderson as he said he violated the motorcyclists’ right-of-way.
The source also stated that moments before this accident occurred, another happened on US.1 at Whiteview Parkway. This collision involved a BMW and a motorcyclist. The woman who had been driving the BMW did not sustain any injuries, however, the motorcyclist in this accident also had to be transported by ground to Halifax Hospital.
The truth is, motorcycle accidents are among some of the worst types of accidents to occur. A biker is much more vulnerable than a driver who is protected by their vehicle and these victims often suffer from serious and even life-threatening injuries.
