A Daycare Center in New Mexico is facing two lawsuits after two workers employed at the center “exchanged heated words” before a fight broke out. One of the workers, Elizabeth Parrez, 25, was captured on video punching her coworker more than eight times and then dragging her down to the floor. She then proceeded on to kick her and all of this played out within a few feet of several four-year-old’s who Parrez had been caring for at that time. The incident occurred on May 3rdat the Future Generations Early Concepts Learning Center located in Clovis, NM.
As a result of her actions, Parrez was arrested and booked into the Curry County Detention Center. She is facing 13 counts of abuse of a child which are third-degree felonies, according to KFYO, and one count of battery. Parrez is no longer employed at the daycare center. Aside from Parrez being hit with several charges, Future Generations is now facing two civil lawsuits filed on behalf of the children’s parents. One lawsuit claims the other daycare worker, Cherokee Ash, hit their child in the back with her foot during the altercation which has caused their child to suffer physical harm and the need for medical care.
The other lawsuit that was filed indicated that Ash’s foot also hit another child, this time in the head. Both of the lawsuits allege that the incident has caused the children to suffer from emotional harm after witnessing the incident.
Now, News Channel 10 did speak with Parrez to get her side of the story and here is what she had to say.
Parrez stated that before the incident occurred, she noticed some bruises on her daughter’s arm, who also happens to attend the daycare where she was working. Naturally, she was upset by the bruises she had discovered and when she brought it to her boss’s attention, she was told they were bite marks and then she was sent back to tend her to class. She mentioned that as the day went on, other coworkers were telling her that Ash was making comments regarding the situation with her daughter.
When Parrez confronted Ash, things got heated and when she questioned Ash as to whether she hurt her daughter, that is when Ash told her she did, in fact, harm her. That is what led Parrez to lose control and begin hitting the other daycare worker as shown in the video footage. While Parrez’s outburst may have led to other children getting hurt, she may also have a case on her hands if it can be proven that her daughter was also harmed while under the care of the daycare.
When a parent places their child under the supervision of a daycare facility, they are expected to be cared for properly and in a hazard free environment. Unfortunately, there have been plenty of cases where children have been dropped off at their daycare in perfect condition only to return home with bumps, bruises, and severe injuries. And in some cases that have been reported, some children suffered catastrophic injuries including head trauma and brain damage.
Back in 2012, a GA toddler suffered a traumatic brain injury after he was struck by a tree branch while at daycare. After several years of fighting, he eventually passed away [Source: Crime Online]. In another case, a nine-month-old baby boy died after he suffered a severe brain injury. Prosecutors in the case said the evidence indicated that the baby died as a result of shaken baby syndrome and that his death was caused by a daycare provider [Source: Fox 5].
