A man in Phoenix is now facing a first-degree murder charge among others after he struck and killed a pedestrian in the process of robbing a cell phone repair store. Fox 10 reported that 39-year-old Shawn Nelson stole a U-Haul truck and used it to transport the items he had taken from Hookup Cellular which is located near 35thAvenue and Thomas Road. After loading a garbage bag up with thousands of dollars’ worth of product, police arrived at the store after responding to a call for a burglary alarm that had gone off.
When Nelson realized that the police had arrived, he jumped into the stolen U-Haul and attempted to get away. In the process of doing so, he crashed into one of the police cruisers and then with a tow truck. After hitting two vehicles, he then hit a woman who had been standing nearby on the sidewalk. She has been identified as 45-year-old Dawn Bestenlehner. After taking police on a chase and causing a significant amount of destruction in the process of doing so, Nelson stopped the truck and attempted to flee from police on foot. Police were able to arrest him and have filed more than a dozen charges against him.
As for Bestenlehner, she was transported to an area hospital where she later died. Nelson was also taken to an area hospital after he suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was later booked into jail.
Fox 10 went on to say that Nelson had “recently served six years in prison for burglary, vehicle theft, and drug charges” and was recently released in 2017. Now, if he is convicted of the current charges filed against him, he could be looking at spending a significant amount of time in prison. Police are currently holding Nelson on a $1 million cash bond.
AZ Family spoke with a co-owner of the cell phone repair store who said that although his property was returned to him, much of it was damaged. He also said that Nelson had damaged his roll-up door and he estimated that he will be spending thousands of dollars to repair all of his ruined products along with the broken door. The source didn’t highlight whether that owner planned to take any sort of legal action against Nelson for the damage he caused nor did it report whether the family of Bestenlehner would be either.
