Pittsburgh Pennsylvania: A 19-year-old died following a police chase leading to a crash.
A 19-year-old was killed following an accident after a police chase in Bellevue on Monday. Officials said Monday that three teenagers were taken to the hospital following the crash. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office announced Tuesday morning that 19-year old Tyrone Jackson died at an area hospital late Monday night following the crash. On Monday, the Allegheny County Police Department said the Avalon police tried to pull a vehicle over at the intersection of California Avenue and Homes Street for speeding. The vehicle pulled over and then fled at high speeds, according to police. The police officer pursued the vehicle, which later crashed at the intersection of Florence and Shade avenues around 5 p.m.
“The officer followed the vehicle from a distance. The vehicle attempted to make a left turn at the intersection of Shade and Florence and it looks like it lost control and hit a telephone pole,” said county homicide Lt. Venerando Costa. Police say a gun was found in the vehicle. Police are investigating.
Potential wrongful death/personal injury legal action.
When an accident victim is injured, or dies because of another’s actions, they, or their estate and family can pursue a wrongful death claim against a deceased person’s estate in court. In a single car crash where only one driver is involved, there will need to be a report from a crash specialist regarding a possible reason for the accident. If mechanical malfunction is a reason, then there may be additional parties to a wrongful death claim, or if in the case of a police chase that was not warranted, legal action against the officers may occur.
Insurance laws and damages.
The State of Pennsylvania uses both a “no-fault” system and a 3rd party liability system. Drivers also have the right to circumvent Pennsylvania’s no-fault law and proceed directly against the at-fault driver under certain circumstances that result in serious injury. “Auto death indemnity” is a no-fault auto insurance coverage that offers a death benefit to drivers, or their passengers in the worst case scenario, and families should speak to a lawyer about this. Compensation for a wrongful death, or injuries resulting from a car accident is in a family, or injured party’s reach to assist in the payment of any significant medical expenses, loss of wages, funeral expenses, and pain and suffering, but actions must be initiated within the two year statute of limitations.
