Pennsylvania –  February 21, 2022

A portion of the sidewalk on Penn Avenue in Downtown Pittsburgh was closed Sunday after police noticed bricks falling from a building in the in the 900 block of Penn Avenue. They called the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire for assistance, as well as the Department of Public Works, and wooden barricades were placed around the building at 941 Penn Ave. The bricks knocked out the back window of a vehicle parked on the street below the building. Police said they gathered information from the vehicle’s owner.  The Department of Permits, Licenses and Inspections will work to determine the structural integrity of the building and its facade.  Falling bricks could damage or impede sidewalk access and cause slip and fall injury or brain injury.

Personal injury lawyers at Scanlon & Wojton Law Firm will fight for victim’s rights with insurance companies, or opposing counsel when a personal injury is caused by dangerous disrepair of buildings or sidewalks resulting in chronic or catastrophic injury.  It is best to have an experienced lawyer answer all of your questions regarding future negative health and economic impacts caused by the accident, and to discuss all avenues available for comprehensive damage recovery to address life changes.

Brain injury.

Falling objects such as bricks may cause accident victims to experience a blow to the head or penetration of a foreign object resulting in TBI.  Individuals can recover from traumatic brain injuries with specialized care, but they may experience residual deficiencies that lead to the inability to continue with previous employment, or activities of daily living.  When brain injuries are not treated in a timely fashion there may be an increased risk of long term brain damage, so it is important for accident victims to seek medical attention.

Premise liability.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data reveals that one out of five falls result in serious injuries, including broken wrists, arms, ankles, or hip fractures, as well as serious head injuries.  Everyday activities can be restricted by injury, or fear of injury.  If a fall occurs at a public place, or sidewalk belonging to a residence or business, a premise liability action may be necessary to recover funds.  A skilled accident lawyer can be helpful with personal injury claims resulting from falls.

  • Premise’s liability falls encompass those injuries that occurred on another’s premises and are usually covered under homeowners’ insurance. This may result from poor conditions on the property, improper maintenance, or upkeep of the property, and include occupants and animals on the premises.
  • Over 800,000 patients a year are hospitalized because of a fall injury, most often because of a head injury or hip fracture.

Damage recovery options.

An experienced injury lawyer can explain Pennsylvania’s negligence laws and how they will impact damage recovery for:

  • Medical bills,
  • Funeral and burial expenses in cases resulting in death,
  • Compensation for lost wages,
  • Compensation for pain and suffering,
  • Punitive damages.

Hire an attorney.

An experienced personal injury attorney can guide individuals through the insurance claims processes, and legal actions that need to be undertaken after bodily injury, or death are the result of a slip-and-fall, or head injury caused by building disrepair in Pittsburgh.
