A San Diego man is facing a series of charges that could have him spending the next 12 years behind bars.
Sajjad Ismael, 20, was behind the wheel of a 2001 Toyota Avalon driving on Interstate 8 when he crashed into the back of a 2017 Toyota Prius at a high rate of speed [Source: Fox 5 San Diego]. Ismael had three male passengers inside the vehicle at the time and after rear-ending the Prius, the Avalon “veered into a center median, struck several trees and then careened back onto the freeway, where it skidded to a halt,” according to Jake Sanchez, who is a CHP public affairs officer.
Ismael managed to get out of the vehicle that was nearly crumpled and fled on foot. Not only did he leave the scene of an accident he was responsible for, but he also left his three male passengers behind. One of those individuals who was identified as 18-year-old Isaac Garcia of El Cajon, died at the scene of the accident. One of the other men was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital with severe trauma and the other was treated for minor injuries at the accident scene. Thankfully, the 38-year-old woman behind the wheel of the Prius was not hurt.
Shortly after the incident occurred, officers were able to locate Ismael in the area of Mission Gorge Road in Grantville and detained him. It turns out, Ismael had three warrants out for charges of DUI and driving without a valid license. He was charged with gross vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run causing death, and driving on a suspended license. His preliminary hearing was scheduled back in June and if he is convicted of the charges, he could spend up 12 years behind bars.

Jury Deadlocked Twice in Case Involving CA Man Responsible for Killing Lyft Driver

Another Californian is up against similar charges after he struck a vehicle and a Lyft driver who had been pulled over to the side of the road while tending to his sick passenger in downtown San Diego [Source: Fox 5 San Diego]. Steven Quintero, 26, was driving on a suspended license when he slammed into the back of Henry O. Reyes’ vehicle. Reyes had pulled over when one of the two women in the vehicle became ill. As Reyes walked in front of the vehicle to get back in, that is when Quintero hit his car. Unfortunately, he died as a result of the impact.
As for the two woman, one suffered a broken bone on top of her foot, whiplash, and a concussion while the other had no recollection of the accident after suffering a neck injury and a bruised spine. Quintero, on the other hand, walked away from the accident, which is illegal, and was arrested a short time later.
As a result of the crash, Quintero was charged with several crimes which included DUI causing injury, hit-and-run, driving on a suspended license, and second-degree murder. In April, a jury ruled that Quintero was guilty of all of the above-named offenses, except they were deadlocked 6-6 on the murder charge. His case was taken before another jury recently, and again, they were deadlocked 11-1 for the acquittal of the murder charge. His San Diego defense attorney spoke out and stated that while she was aware her client has a severe learning disability” and “has made some bad decisions, he is not a murder.” Quintero is due back in court July 13thfor a status conference.
