There has never been a better time to become a more attentive and cautious driver than now. Car accidents are occurring on a daily basis and semi-truck collisions are reported just as frequently. Sadly, a recent incident occurred near the San Luis Obispo County/Kern County line that left a 22-year-old civil engineering student dead.
On April 30th, the day the accident transpired, KSBY initially reported that a young woman was behind the wheel of her 2007 Ford Mustang heading northbound on Highway 41 when she lost control of her vehicle. The source later confirmed her identity as Iriana Pina. The Mustang then crossed the double

yellow lines and went into the southbound lanes of the highway. Her vehicle ended up in the path of a 2017 International truck towing two trailers. The truck struck the side of the Mustang and jackknifed. A fire broke out and 63-year-old Fillimon Lopez managed to get out of the truck before the fire spread.

Unfortunately, Pina died upon impact with the truck.

Investigators were working to identify what caused the young woman to lose control of her vehicle and encouraged any witnesses who may have seen her prior to the accident to contact the California Highway Patrol at 805-434-1822. Pina was a student at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA and worked for Tulare Lake Compost in Kettleman City. A GoFundMe account was set up in her name and so far, KSBY reported that $5,700 was collected toward the $10,000 goal. Cal Poly’s Civil Environmental Engineering department also stated they would be collecting donations for her family.
