While it is obvious to many drivers that taking your eyes off the road for a second or two could cost you your life, still, motorists today find themselves focusing on other things while operating their vehicles instead of putting their full attention on driving. And the accident that recently occurred in Arizona is a prime example of what could happen if you were to do the same.
Kate Knaak’s mother and grandmother had been heading north on the interstate on their way to Camp Verde when Knaak said she felt in her stomach that something wasn’t right. It turns out, her instincts were trying to tell her that something had happened, although she didn’t know what it was. Knaak later found out that her mother and grandmother were rear-ended by a semi-truck after the trucker had looked away from the road and “plowed into the line of cars stopped in traffic,” Knaak’s family’s being the one he hit first. Apparently, the flow of traffic had slowed and the trucker failed to acknowledge this.
As a result of the impact, the vehicle Knaak’s family was traveling in rolled several times and left one of the occupants inside severely injured, Knaak’s mother. Fortunately, her grandmother managed to walk away from the accident, and she even told her granddaughter that she had seen the semi in her rear-view mirror and warned Knaak’s mother that he didn’t look like he was stopping.
Knaak’s mother had to be rushed to the hospital as she had suffered seven broken vertebra and some broken ribs. While the family was thankful both women survived, the driver who had been in front of them wasn’t as lucky. The news source identified that driver as Harry Bates and said that he hadn’t survived the crash.
Knaak’s mother was expected to stay in the ICU for at least two weeks while she worked toward recovery and her daughter said that her mom did not have short-term disability insurance. This means they had to be without income until their long-term disability coverage took effect. Until then, the family set up a GoFundMe account to help raise some money until their insurance funds came through.
Although it was clear that the truck driver caused this unfortunate collision, the news outlet says that this stretch of road, I-17 to Flagstaff, “is the fourth-deadliest highway in the country.” And after experiencing first-hand how dangerous the roadway is, Knaak is hoping that something can be done to help improve the level of safety for all drivers who to travel this route.
