If you were caught with possession of marijuana and you use it for medical purposes, consider speaking with a licensed and skilled criminal defense lawyer in your state who might be able to get these charges dropped.

There was a point in time where the discussion of allowing marijuana to be used legally for medical purposes was unheard of. Point blank period. Legislatures and other government officials didn’t even fathom the idea. But extensive research has been conducted for years now and it turns out, marijuana, when broken down to a specific form, actually benefits us.  It might sound outlandish to some, but the fact is, science has proven that this “drug” has mended conditions individuals are experiencing and helped others cope with the health issues they can’t seem to fight off.
There have been many individuals from the Marijuana Policy Project and other organizations that dedicate their time and efforts to getting the substance legalized, and it seems to be working in their favor. According to al.com, nearly half of our population, including 28 states and the District of Columbia, are legally permitted to smoke some form of marijuana but for medical purposes only. There are a few states now that have legalized the substance for recreational use, but there is still a lot of work that needs to be done before the other states come aboard with that.
While half the country has decided that using medical marijuana isn’t such as bad thing after all, some states that are recognized as a traditionally Republican state have even come aboard. West Virginia is on the verge of legalizing it, which is a predominately Republican state as 42 points went to Trump in the presidential election. So, if everyone is hopping on board on the medical marijuana train, why is Attorney General Jeff Sessions attempting to “go to war” with the matter?
Why are some government officials against medical marijuana?
According to Sessions, “our nation needs to say clearly once again that using drugs is bad.” Sessions reminded this to law enforcement officials and is implying he is going to try and get everyone back on his mind track that marijuana isn’t good, and it is in fact a drug. Perhaps Sessions hasn’t had any reason to seek medical treatment for cancer or wasn’t forced to be placed on heavy pain killers for an injury or illness he suffered from. Otherwise he may have learned of the various ways marijuana can benefit these conditions. And perhaps this why so many individuals have decided to go along with the trend of legalizing medical marijuana as opposed to fighting against it.

What are the benefits of using medical marijuana?
According to webmd.com, doctors might prescribe medical marijuana for the following reasons:

  • Muscle spasms caused by multiple sclerosis
  • Nausea from cancer chemotherapy
  • Poor appetite and weight loss resulting from chronic illness such as HIV or nerve pain.
  • Seizure disorders
  • Crohn’s disease

Aside from the benefits medical marijuana brings, many criminal defense lawyers are forced to represent clients who are using the substance for these very purposes. Many innocent individuals are jailed for long periods of time for possession of the drug. Obviously, this is a growing issue as some states see nothing wrong with using it when it is going to be used for medical purposes.
