A five-vehicle collision occurred on Saturday, August 18ththat was initiated by UFC fighter Desmond Green. Green had been traveling on I-75 in his Dodge Durango when he suddenly lost control of the SUV. ESPN said his vehicle “veered into the path of a tractor-trailer, causing a chain-reaction crash with three other vehicles.” Two passengers traveling inside of a Toyota Yaris suffered fatal injuries as a result of the collision. MMA Junkie identified them as 67-year-old Emelina Morfa and 76-year-old Emma Suarez Hernandez. The driver of that same vehicle was left with serious injuries.
MMA Junkie stated that Green and another driver managed to walk away from the multi-vehicle accident with minor injuries. While police worked to clear the scene, they also collected evidence that would hopefully help them determine why Green lost control of his SUV. Although Green has not yet been accused of engaging in negligent behavior which led to the crash, officials are waiting on toxicology results to see if Green had been operating his vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
MMA Junkie went on to explain that Green had just been cited for driving with a suspended license and no proof of insurance after another accident occurred in Deerfield Beach two weeks before this unfortunate accident. That incident resulted in less than $1,000 worth of damage. Back in April, Green was pulled over by Fort Lauderdale Police for an expired registration tag. The officer who had conducted the stop said he “smelled cannabis emitting from the vehicle” and Green admitted that he had marijuana and “mushrooms” inside the car stuffed inside his shoes.
As a result of that traffic stop, Green was cited for the marijuana along with having expired tags and was ordered to appear in court. Unfortunately, he failed to show up and a warrant was issued for his arrest. Lucky for him, he “was able to reverse the order and postpone his appearance until August 30th.” Now, since he has been involved in yet another accident, an arraignment date has been scheduled for him for September 6th.
The outcome of that court hearing may affect whether Green shows up for his next fight which is scheduled for September 15th. As of right now, he is still expected to appear at UFC Fight Night 136 where he will face Mairbek Taisumov.
