Motorcycle accidents are especially dangerous due to the high probability of serious injuries and death. A rider on a bike does not have the protection of the frame of a large vehicle with airbags, seatbelts, and other safety measures.

A Broward County police officer died while off duty and riding his motorcycle in Boca Raton, Florida

Local police officer crashes his motorcycle on Federal Highway

An emergency call was placed to the Boca Raton police on a Tuesday night regarding an accident on the southbound lanes of Federal Highway, near the SW 18th Street intersection. Officers immediately shut down the southbound lanes, as it appeared that the damage was severe. It was later confirmed that this was a single vehicle accident, involving only a motorcycle and its driver.

The 54 year old male victim was transported to Delray Medical Center following the incident, but he died a short time later from his injuries. The identity of the victim was released later, and authorities confirmed that the man was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and a current member of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office for 21 years.

The Broward County Sheriff released a statement to the public on their social media accounts following the confirmation of the victim’s death.

Boca Raton is in the southern part of Palm Beach County, south of the city of West Palm Beach. A full investigation will attempt to determine the exact cause of the motorcycle crash

Injury cases involving motorcycles and other motor vehicles

Accidents involving cars, trucks, or motorcycles are one of the most common reasons why people end up in civil court. Most of these lawsuits are filed as negligence actions. There are four different elements of a negligence case, and they are proven by showing that one driver breached the normal duty of care on the roads, and caused an accident and injuries.  The element of damages is used by the victim’s attorney to calculate their total losses and ask for this amount from the verdict or settlement.

Fatal accidents and wrongful death laws

If someone dies during the accident, their family can file a wrongful death case to receive compensation on their behalf. Any money paid out can be used for expenses such as funeral, burial, and medical treatment, along with future wages that the victim would have earned to support their family. Most lawyers who handle personal injury cases will also be able to explain the specifics of the state’s wrongful death law, as there are some special rules that make these actions slightly different from other civil lawsuits.
