Crashes involving large trucks occur hundreds of thousands of times each year. In 2015 alone, “large trucks were involved in more than 400,000 crashes that resulted in more than 4,000 deaths and 116,000 injuries” [Source: AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety]. With so many people dying and several others sustaining injuries, it is clear there is room for improvement in the trucking industry to help get these numbers down. But how? Aside from ensuring that vehicles are inspected and that truckers are properly trained, there are actually some rather useful forms of technology that can be used to make trucking safer for everyone.
The AAA has shared four types of technology that can be used to increase safety and prevent accidents. These include:
- Automatic Emergency Braking
This device is used to detect when a truck driver is in danger of striking the car in front of them. If the system finds the driver is at risk of doing so, it will automatically apply the vehicle’s brakes. It is estimated that this device can help prevent up to 5,294 crashes, 2,753 injuries, and 55 deaths each year.
- Air Disc Brakes
Air disc brakes “provide maintenance and performance advantages relative to traditional drum brakes.” The AAA estimates that air disc brakes can help prevent up to 2,411 crashes, 1,447 injuries, and 37 deaths each year.
- Lane Departure Warning Systems
After this device is installed on a large truck, it would detect when a driver drifts out of his/her lane and provide them with a warning so that they could correct their mistake before causing an accident. This device has the potential to prevent up to 6,372 crashes, 1,342 injuries, and 115 deaths each year, says AAA.
- Video-Based Onboard Safety Monitoring Systems
These video monitoring systems are installed inside the vehicle. The video camera along with other sensors are used to “monitor the driver’s behavior and performance, and help the driver’s employer to provide feedback [highlighting ways they can improve their driving].” These devices can also help the public along with employers understand what factors are contributing to the many truck accidents that are occurring today.
In fact, the Chicago Sun-Times recently shared details from one incident involving a car that was rear-ended by a truck traveling at a high rate of speed. The source stated that when the truck crashed into the back of the car, four people inside the car died and when the dash cam video was reviewed, it showed the truck driver looking down at a computer tablet in his hand.
The AAA says that by “equipping large trucks with advanced safety technologies,” companies could help to prevent 63,000 or more truck-related accidents each year. Now, although these forms of technology have been around and available for use for some time now, there are still companies that have yet to equip their vehicles with them. Many forms of technology are costly and too much of an expense for a company to take on. However, AAA says that “new research shows that the benefits of adding many of these technologies to trucks clearly outweigh the cost.” On top of that, they can also help “alleviate driver concerns,” says Jake Nelson who is the AAA director of Traffic Safety Advocacy and Research as many drivers tend to be “fearful” and “vulnerable” when traveling around large trucks.
Unfortunately, until all companies take advantage of the safety features that are available, we will continue to read about tragic wrecks that occur throughout that state of Illinois and all across the U.S.
