If you predicted that the conditions of the detention centers used to house immigrants in California are nothing short of poor and inadequate, your predictions may have been right.

ABC 7 recently shared some insight into what it was like inside two detention facilities that are currently being used to hold immigrants who have been detained, and the findings are rather disturbing. According to the source, eight Democratic members of Congress from CA took a tour of the Victorville Federal Correctional Complex as well as the Adelanto Detention Facility back in the middle of August. The representatives found several things to be disconcerting, but overall, they said that both facilities “had inadequate staffing” and “a lack of medical care for detainees.”
The source highlighted that Victorville is a “federal medium-security prison which has a contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to house 1,000 immigrant detainees,” while Adelanto is considered to be the “largest detention center in California.” After touring Victorville, the representatives said that it “appeared unequipped to handle detainees.” Unfortunately, this facility doesn’t only house immigrants but also criminals, some who committed serious and violent crimes. And because the staff working there are primarily trained to deal with these types of criminals, the representatives say they aren’t “trained to deal with detainees.”
The reality is, many of the immigrants that are currently being housed in these two facilities were either seeking a better way of life or were trying to escape the unsafe conditions they were subjected to live in back in their native county. The source pointed out that many of the individuals being detained “tried to enter the U.S. through Mexico after fleeing persecution in their home counties.” The representatives also shared that more than half of the immigrants that are currently housed in these facilities are of Indian or Sikh backgrounds. One of the couples who was taken into custody left India “because their fellow villagers didn’t approve of their relationship and were threatening to commit an “honor killing.” Sadly, it is these types of individuals, who are not considered to be a criminal or a threat to society, that are being thrown into the mix with dangerous and deadly people who actually earned their time behind bars.
Some of the other findings the representatives shared with the news source was that the individuals who were of a Sikh background were “denied religious accommodations for their diet and headdress.” And many of the immigrants who came in weren’t permitted to leave their cell or change their clothes for the first 15 days. It was also noted that they were denied adequate medical care.
After touring these facilities and seeing what the conditions were actually like inside as opposed to what was being told to the public by ICE and USCIS, ABC 7 says “the members of the delegation say they plan to take their concerns to ICE and note that previous visits have resulted in some improvements for detainees.”
