Truck accident lawyers in New Jersey work with crash victims on a daily basis and understand that the roadways would be much safer if more was done to prevent accidents from occurring.
Accidents with big rigs and semi trucks are often fatal which is why the industry is looking for new ways to combat against the causes of these accidents.
We are all well aware of the fact that truck accidents continue to transpire and are often fatal when it involves large commercial vehicles such as semis. We also hear about the innovative forms of technology being developed that are expected to help reduce these accidents. So, what exactly has the trucking industry decided to do about all these unfortunate large truck collisions that continue to transpire?
Well, they have been looking into adopting some form of technology that is known to help prevent traffic accidents. The world of technology continues to surprise us all with the many ways computers can contribute to saving our lives. Some popular types of technology that could prevent truck accidents include:
- A Forward Collision Warning (FCW) System- According to safecar.gov, a FCW system “is an advanced safety technology that monitors a vehicle’s speed, the speed of the vehicle in front of it, and the distance between the vehicles.” That means if a car is approaching a trucker and they are getting too close for comfort, the system will warn of an impending crash. It is important to note that the system will not take control over the vehicle or keep the driver from operating it.
- Lane Departure Warning (LDW) Systems- These could be rather useful to truckers as they “alert you whenever you unintentionally drift too close to the edges of the lane” according to AAA. If the driver does drift into another lane, a warning is usually given in the form of an alarm or the driver’s steering wheel or seat will begin to vibrate. This might be a great way to reduce the number of semi and big rig truck collisions as many of these truck drivers drive drowsy and tend to drift off the roadway or in another lane.
Truck Accidents Could Also be Prevented with the Implementation of Guard Rails
Although the innovative technology seems to be a great way to begin getting the statistics to drop in number, there is another alternative, although the government isn’t making it a requirement for companies. The New Jersey Herald has identified something that one safety group claims could prevent deaths, and many of them. They are suggesting guard rails and the purpose of them is to help stop vehicles from going under these large trucks in the event an accident arises.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, these side rails revealed that when a test was done with and without the guard rails in place, the outcome would have saved the life of the driver and its passengers. The test used a midsize car traveling at about 35 miles per hour. When it hit the guard rail, the front did crumple but the air bags deployed and protected the test dummy inside. But, when the car hit the side of the large truck without the side rails, the roof was sheared off and the car came to a resting position under the trailer.
While it would seem as though the trucking industry would want to adopt these methods immediately, there is still some speculation and questioning which is why some are hesitant to do so.
