In the wake of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, FL, it has been confirmed that 17 innocent lives belonging to both students and school staff have been taken, leaving many families broken and South Florida all shook up. Nineteen-year-old Nikolas Cruz was arrested, charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder, and is currently being held without bond in a South Florida jail. With this school shooting being the 18th school shooting to occur already this year, we often wonder why these things happen and what leads a person to commit such a heinous crime. And low and behold, we have some information that might help you understand Cruz’s motif and why this disturbed teen did what he did.
Cruz, who once attended the high school just a year ago, has been referred to as a “troubled” teen by many who attended classes with him. Some weren’t surprised when they heard it was Cruz who had been identified as the shooter simply because he talked about hunting and killing things casually, as if death should ever be discussed in a casual manner. Aside from his behavior indicating that he fit the description of someone who could carry out the act, it is also being reported that he has been attending meetings held by The Republic of Florida.  What is The Republic of Florida? Get ready as it is pretty disturbing.
Basically, The Republic of Florida(ROF) identifies itself as a “white civil rights organization fighting for white identitarian politics, and the ultimate creation of a white ethnostate so we can be free from anti-white policies and have policies that reflect our values as white westerners,”[Source: ABC Local 10 News]. Those who join the white nationalist militia must:

  • Pledge their lives and fortunes to the republic.
  • “Members must pledge their “uncorrupted hand to people of European lineage and those who consider themselves our allies.”
  • Members cannot have sexual relationships with anyone outside of their race.
  • Members must pledge to fight to the best of their ability for the ROF.

You can read all 10 codes that members of the group must abide obey by visiting the ROF site directly.

The ROF also are involved in paramilitary training and will stand their ground against anyone who attacks them. Huffington Post shared content from the ROF website that read, “Best bet is to fight us with your words if you disagree with us. But if you want to get violent and put your hands on us, that works in our favor. We can always use the practice.”
The republic isn’t shy to admit they condone violence or how they feel about other races. The group also described feminists as “miserable young gals with absolutely no direction in their life.” Jordan Jereb, who is a leader within the ROF group, says Cruz participated in the group’s paramilitary drills in Tallahassee. He mentioned that Cruz was “brought up” by a member of the ROF and that the group supplied him with at least one gun, although they had no involvement in the shooting. Jereb went on to share some more disturbing statements where he said, “I’m not trying to glorify it, but he was pretty efficient in what he did.” It is likely that Cruz used the training he received during the time he spent with the group to plan his attack. Jereb also mentioned that Cruz had “trouble with a girl” and thinks that might be why he carried out the attack on Valentine’s Day, a day we all celebrate by showing our love and affection for one another.
Nikolas Cruz attended a training held by The Republic of Florida which may have prepared him to carry out the attack on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
Although Cruz was being represented by a criminal defense lawyer earlier today in court, the community and the devastated families can only hope that Cruz will never be given the opportunity to see the light of day after killing such young and innocent individuals and taking the lives of brave teachers who risked everything for their students.
